I'm running 10.11 beta (15A225f) on a late 2011 MacBook Pro. I have a Canon MF4370dn printer on my network. The latest driver installer is for Yosemite and I get the error message: "Cannot install on this version of the operating system you are using." Is there any workaround? Or am I stuck with not being able to use the printer until Canon releases an El Capitan installer? Thanks!
It sounds like you're trying to add a driver from Canon's own website. Normally the preferred way to add a printer in OS X is to let it select the appropriate driver automatically from a very comprehensive catalog that should work seemlessly with the latest OS.
Ensure your printer is connected by cable or wifi and try System Preferences > Printers & Scanners > the + button in the lower left of the window. It should then see your printer and download a working driver automatically.
There's actually a very good chance that the Yosemite driver would work prefectly well on El Capitan, it's just that the installer checks a system file containing the OS X version number and checks that against a list - it's purely nominal - the only problem is that 10.11 isn't on that list yet because it wasn't around when the list was made.
Now, you can't change the driver - Canon will do that in a few months probably - but you can trick the driver into thinking that it's installing onto Yosemite by temporarily editing the system file. If you'd like to do that, carefully follow the steps below:
After installing the print driver, you should expect to see a pop-up appear when you print a file. Enter your Elon email username and password. You also must be on elonu-secure WiFi or plugged into a data port with ethernet cable for this to work.
If you are attempting to use a faculty/staff Canon device (commonly located in an office/departmental areas or not listed on our Student Print Locations list), you should use the drivers located on the Faculty/Staff Canon printing page.
Same issue: I downloaded a new printer driver from Canon but cannot instal it. A message appears: "Cannot install on this version of the operating system you are using." and "Run the installer on a version that supports it.
I am having the same issue. I am unable to add our Canon I-Adv 6065 printer to my computer. I have followed these instructions deleting all Canon Printer Drivers, emptying the trash, and then resetting the mac printer system. I have downloaded the new driver for Big Sur from Canon but am unable to install it.
Since I was unable to install the driver from the files Canon gave me so I manually copied the ppd.gz file into the PPD folder but my computer is unable to discover the printer on our network even though it can connect and set up other printers on the same network and I can access the Printer's webpage through it's IP address. Other people in the office are able to connect and print to it just fine it's a problem with my computer.
Same issue here on MacBook Pro M1 on 11.0.1. Big Sur Drivers listed on the Canon site for the ir_ADV C5235 will not load, receive an error that the version is incorrect for my operating system. Attempted to add the printer via IP address and received various errors but it appeared online as available, but it crashes with an error when sending a print job. Reset the print system more than once with no affect. Appears that the supplied drivers are not compatible after all.
Sorry, I see no point in removing all Canon software, nor in resetting the printer system. The comp is brand new. Adding a printer will not be a problem if I could install the new driver. Yet I cannot run the installer app to install the driver.
Odd thing is that when downloading the drivers from Canon, it defaults to macOS Catalina 10.14 as the "Detected" OS version, which is wrong. Wonder if there is some mismatch both in the website and the driver detection software. 2ff7e9595c
